  Part of how Don Rickles got away with all his insults is that in real life he was the nicest, kindest, most generous person you could know. The other part is that while he had a lot of prepared comments he would use over and over, he was also extremely quick-witted and those lightning speed comebacks were what we all waited for. Much like musicians today feel honored to be parodied by Weird Al, back then it was a mark of honor to get roasted by Don Rickles.

  Don was burning everyone down back in the day without prejudice,  lol.  Back when people understood that it was all in fun and could laugh at themselves without getting their feelings hurt.  It was a better time for everyone!

  Don Rickles is the GOAT of savage comedy- the original, the classic.  He made fun of everyone equally, and it was awesome.

  My favorite Don Rickles story: Don was very good friends with Frank Sinatra. One time, he said to Frank, "I'm taking my date to your favorite restaurant, and I really want to get in good. Do me a favor and come over and say 'Hi' to me so I can impress her?" Frank was like, "Yeah, sure, Don. No problem." Later on, Frank walked over to the table and was like, "Hey, Don, how. . ." And Don was like, "What's wrong with you, Frank?!? Can't you see I'm having a conversation with my date? Get outta here, will ya?!?" And Frank just walked away laughing.

  I'm 74. I grew up with that humor. Those guys were my dad's age. Many of them came from immigrant households. They knew that we're all basically the same. That didn't stop them from laughing at their differences.

  I’m still laughing. Don Rickled was actually in real life a very kind man. They were roasting famous people.

  Rickels, Red Foxx, Richard Pryor and so many more back in the day could make you laugh at yourself about race, ethnicity or where you lived and nobody got offended because we all knew how to take a joke, with a big hearty laugh
