American students gain extra points for full-sentence-answers and stating their sources. In germany that's the bare minimum. 🤣

I think normally professors give out a list with books and then it’s up to you what you read. It’s not school, so you just don’t follow one book

I get the feeling from her video that she has not fully grasped the German University system. There is no "book per class" to read and base your studies upon. This (reading a book and having sometimes tests after several chapters or having to give the teacher respective answers when questioned) is middle to high school level, but certainly not University. There might be books in form of a literature recommendation your professor will issue, depending on your subject, of course. But it's entirely up to you whether you buy the books, or lend them from the library, or skip reading some of them at all. German/European Universities will ask their students to not rely on everything being laid out for them, but to work independently, to rely on own research and sources. Everyone going for a Bachelor, or Masters, a Diploma, or Exam by State degree will have to write a "thesis". Academic final exam thesis. Then there are, of course, dissertations for a doctorate, and habilitations for a professorate. It will be part of your grade in the final semester.

23:10 American universities are practically an extension of school: frontal teaching, multiple choices, and curricula that must be worked through.
In European schools, students are expected to acquire knowledge, conduct their own research, and form study groups to learn about knowledge and how to acquire knowledge.

If the test had 5 questions it is considered to not only give a plain answer, but showcase that you understood the topic and that you are able to combine your knowledge to a comprehensive solution or fundamental understanding of the topic.

Any ape can answer multiple-choice tests - it's pure memorization. Writing an essay or a dissertation on predetermined topics - bringing your own thoughts to paper in words - is a whole different level.

8:43 No, she didn't miss anything. That's what studying means (historcally even more so). Do your own work, be automous, use your brain. Because this is no longer school, you're supposed to think and work in a scientific way.

13:25 the reason German students knock on their desk is that they're supposed to take their own notes during seminars, which was traditionally ( and is often still done) by hand. Meaning at the end of the presentation you might still be busy writing with one hand, so you can't clap and instead use your other hand to knock on the table.

My sister studied in the states. The level for her bachelor was comparable to our high-school classes 11-13.

University in Germany is on another level.

University isn't supposed to be school. You are expected to learn what interests you and then start to think for yourself. In my time at uni we were always told to challenge everything we were taught. You don't have to attend most lecture (though it really pays to do so), you just have to pass the exam at the end of semester.

It starts with the fact that the Abitur in Germany is more demanding than high school graduation in the US. My friend spent a year in the US, graduating from high school and receiving honors for being the third-best student in her class. After that, she had to go to school here in Germany for another three years to pass the Abitur with mediocre grades.

We downgraded our university degrees to international bachelor and masters standards a while ago. It used to be much harder. Also multiple choice tests are for driving licences not for university. 😂
