This body position is most likely not very do-able for those of us with a bigger, rounder stomachs. The edge of the bottom bout will most likely not come into contact with your knee because the bass will be further away from your body due to your stomach size. Still good information to know. :)

This video changed my life! I am an amateur guitar player for around 2 decades who switched to double bass last year. I always wanted to play double bass and I really enjoy every second of playing it. So I kept playing through lower back pain, shoulder blade pain and strain in my arms, thinking that it's a minor discomfort I can neglect in comparison to the joy of playing.
After this video (and the follow-up one about playing with no pain) I tried this idea of holding the bass without your hands on the last jam session and last couple of practice sessions and I was astonished - I didn't feel pain, I didn't feel tired and my palms didn't feel like I was doing pull-ups. Thank you!

One question about the thumb position: once I feel comfortable enough to hold the bass upright without supporting it with my hands, I try to lay may fingers on the fingerboard in the thumb position that ruins the whole balance I achieved with my belly and my left knee. So how do I compensate the pressure from the left hand while playing? Push a bit harder with the left knee? Use the elbow or a shoulder a little bit?
Really appreciate your answer and thank you again for the great content!

Very intersting video, thank you. I am used to play sitting on a high stool (sorry for my english, I'm french) : what do you think about playing on a stool for thumb position?

It looks like the video cuts off in the middle of a sentence. Was this intentional, or was it uploaded by mistake?

Do some actually say that lower strings should not be played in thumb position?

Do you play with one knee bent? I did for a while but I changed to both knees straight because it was messing up my body, my hips and my knees were misaligned when I played like that. Everybody's different I just wanted to know your thoughts
