"Some people are larger than life. Their stories bend reality, stretching beyond time, memory, and the people who knew them best. In the spring of 2024, I moved my grandmother into a memory care facility. My heart broke as I watched one of my childhood best friends slowly forget me. That experience became the catalyst for PATINA, a film about family, loss, and seeing the magic in the people around us before their stories fade.

While developing the screenplay, I drew inspiration from my favorite childhood films and my hometown, Wahoo, Nebraska — an area originally settled by the Otoe and Ponca Nations. I imagined a larger-than-life figure walking the halls of my grandmother’s facility, a presence that could connect the past and present.

Patina is portrayed as a member of the Ponca Nation, a detail shaped by the guidance of the incredible Casey Camp-Horinek, Councilwoman and Hereditary Drumkeeper of the Women’s Scalp Dance Society of the Ponca Nation of Oklahoma. In addition to playing our title character, Casey also served as a cultural consultant for the project. She was integral in shaping an authentic portrayal of Indigenous identity and history. I simply could not have made this film without her generosity and guidance. She is truly the embodiment of Patina.

At its core, PATINA is a love letter to my grandparents, a reminder that stories don’t fade if someone is willing to carry them forward. We must cherish the time we have with those we love and keep their stories alive. That is why I made this film, and what I hope audiences will take away from it."

— Jake Hull, Writer and Director of Patina

I didn’t expect to cry. Really, I didn’t. Here I am, with tears and memories everywhere. Thank you so much for making the effort to accurately portray a Native American person. It makes such a huge difference. Also, I love the fact that it was set in a senior living home. Many folks have trouble connecting, and this was purely wonderful. Thank you.

As we get older we do more time traveling than ever before, I have revisited many places I have not thought about in years and it reminds me of the full life I have had and the wonders of discovery of becoming a young man and what it was like to chase dreams as well as tail. My Mom & Dads memories are still alive so there's that

My daughter’s cat passed last night, and I really needed this. Her name was Mika, she was orange, had huge eyes, and fostered four orphaned pandemic kittens. She was the loveliest cat I’ve ever known.

I'm 74yrs old and I've rarely had a short film move as much as this one did. It maybe true that we only exist as long as people remember us, I hope so. I do wish we could live until we a ready to go. I'm not afraid of dying, but I want to know what happens! Not just with my grandkids, but with the world. Parts of life are like watching a movie that had an evil overlord that you have to see the ending just to see the evil doers get their just rewards. Right now America is rushing to a singularity, a point where it can branch off into many directions. I love my kids and hope they can hold onto my memory and cherish all we have done together. Just remember ,when an older person shares a memory with you, it is a sort of time travel. Forgive an old fart like me for rambling on! Peace Out, Ya'll ✌️!
