Why do men arrive early at the masjid during ramadhaan? Because they'd rather be in the mosque away from the clean-up job done by the women of the household

A path to true freedom from a Quranic perspective is deeply intertwined with the concepts of submission to God (Allah), self-purification (tazkiyah), and justice. Here are some key themes:

1. True freedom is submission to Allah
The Quran teaches that real liberation comes not from unrestricted desires or material pursuits but from submitting wholeheartedly to Allah.
  - “And do not follow your desires, for they will lead you astray from the way of Allah.” (Quran 38:26)
  - “There is no compulsion in religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.” (Quran 2:256)

This means true freedom is not about doing whatever one pleases but aligning oneself with divine guidance, which leads to inner peace and righteousness.

2. Freedom from oppression and injustice
Islam opposes all forms of oppression—whether external (political, social, economic) or internal (spiritual, psychological).
  - “Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and We sent down with them the Scripture and the Balance so that people may uphold justice.” (Quran 57:25)

Justice ensures that no one is enslaved by tyranny, whether from rulers, unjust systems, or societal pressures.

3. Freedom from the chains of the self (nafs)
The Quran warns against being enslaved by one's ego, desires, and whims.
  - “Have you seen the one who takes his own desires as his god?” (Quran 25:43)

True freedom is achieved when one disciplines the soul, overcoming greed, arrogance, and impatience.

4. Freedom through knowledge and reflection
Islam encourages seeking knowledge as a means of enlightenment and liberation.
  - “Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only those with understanding will remember.” (Quran 39:9)

Knowledge liberates individuals from ignorance, superstition, and blind following.

5. Freedom in the Hereafter
The ultimate form of freedom is freedom from Hellfire and the eternal bliss of Paradise.
  - “And We will remove whatever is in their hearts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.” (Quran 15:47)

A believer’s struggle for righteousness in this world leads to true freedom in the next life.

Conclusion
The Quranic path to true freedom is not about unrestrained autonomy but about liberation from falsehood, injustice, and the chains of one's lower self. It is a journey of self-discipline, faith, knowledge, and striving for justice in society.

A path to true freedom, from a Quranic perspective, is deeply rooted in submission to Allah, self-purification, and the pursuit of justice. It is not about absolute autonomy or the ability to follow every passing desire, but rather about aligning oneself with divine guidance, which leads to inner peace and true liberation.

The Quran teaches that freedom is found in surrendering to the Creator rather than being enslaved by one’s own whims or external forces. It warns against following desires blindly, as they can lead a person away from what is just and right. Submission to Allah is not a form of oppression but a path to clarity, purpose, and peace of mind. It frees a person from the anxieties of worldly attachments and the pressures of societal expectations, guiding them toward a life of meaning and moral integrity.

Freedom also extends to the social and political realm. Islam opposes oppression in all its forms, whether it comes from unjust rulers, exploitative economic systems, or the injustices individuals inflict upon one another. The Quran emphasizes that justice is the foundation of a balanced society and that true freedom cannot exist where tyranny and corruption prevail. The mission of the prophets was to establish justice so that people could live with dignity, without fear of being controlled by forces that seek to dominate them.

Beyond external oppression, there is also the challenge of inner enslavement. The Quran warns against being controlled by the ego, by greed, or by an insatiable hunger for power and material wealth. A person who is ruled by their lower desires may believe they are free, yet they are in reality shackled by impulses that prevent them from attaining true peace. Liberation comes through self-discipline, through mastering the self rather than being mastered by it.

Another key element of freedom is knowledge and reflection. The Quran repeatedly calls on people to think, to seek understanding, and to reflect on the world around them. Ignorance is a form of bondage, keeping people trapped in cycles of misinformation and manipulation. Through knowledge, individuals can break free from superstition and blind following, developing the capacity to make informed and wise choices.

Ultimately, the highest form of freedom is that which is found in the Hereafter. This world is full of tests, challenges, and limitations, but the true reward for those who seek righteousness is eternal peace and contentment in the presence of their Creator. In the Hereafter, the burdens of resentment, injustice, and suffering will be lifted, and those who strive for truth will experience the freedom that is untainted by worldly struggles.

The Quranic vision of freedom is holistic, encompassing both the inner self and the external world. It is about breaking free from all that enslaves—whether material, psychological, or spiritual—and walking the path of righteousness, justice, and unwavering faith.
