Retired at 44 back in 2023. Best decision I ever made. Everything has a shelf life. Enjoy and preserve your health and wellness.

I am 53 and will be retiring in about the next 10 months or so at the age of 54. If you have the means, my recommendation is to retire in your 50s. You only have a finite number of 'good' years before your age catches up with you. So don't miss out on those.

66 1/2 was my full retirement age. My wife's fra was 66 and 10 months. Unfortunately she passed away from cancer at 61. I retired 30 days later at 63. I draw survivor benefits on her account. In a year at 70 I will go to my account. My body was starting to break down at 63 from what I did at 18. Thank you Uncle Sam. I am now rated as a 100% disabled veteran. I would trade it all to still have my wife alive and with me. We don't get to choose. I don't have any desire to travel. I did enough of that at 18. I spend all the time I can with my grandkids.

I'm a dentist. Worked 12 hour days 6 days a week for about the first 10 years. Then 10 hour days 4 days a week for 20 years. Then 8 hours a day 3 days a week for 7 years..... then I had to retire because the joints in my hand are ruined. I sure am glad I was a runner all those years. I didn't retire rich by any means. That's not my lifestyle. I gave away more money and services than I ever kept. I'm very happy with my decisions in that regard. BEST WISHES to all. Don't wait too long. enjoy your life. HIt it really hard in the beginning.... your body does wear out if you are in a very heavily physical profession.

As a electrical engineer two things I calculate for systems are availability and reliability. When you are young your availability to enjoy life is low due to commitments but reliability is high due to low illness and quick recovery. Once you reach say 65 your availability to enjoy life is high is retirement but reliability can be low due to illnesses and long recovery times. The trick is to retire early when both are high.

Governments and financial planners want you to work as long as possible. Governments to get as much tax as they can, delay paying SS/ pension and to minimise the amount of SS/ pension they pay out. Financial planners get paid based on the size of your retirement fund,so the more you have the more they get paid. Delaying another year is another year of running the numbers for you.

Speaking of "engineers," I retired comfortably as a class one, freight railroad, locomotive engineer over 8 years ago at age 60 after 37 years in the RR industry. Railroad Retirement in the U.S. allows railroad employees to take their full pension at age 60 with at least 360 months (30 years) service.
