  There is always misconceptions about how this dub came to be. It was claimed that the original bombed in Japan but if look at how was received and the numbers, it was rivaling Pokemon back then aka it was doing EXTREMELY well. What happened was when it was time to do a dub for.... I forget where, but it wasn&apos;t English (Apparently might have been English that stuck to original script), THAT one flopped so when it went international to make an(other) English Dub they were told, &quot;Since it flopped do whatever to make it sell, however the names, the ghosts and how to defeat them must stay the same.&quot; Due to the previous failure of whichever dub, that one got confused for being the original Japanese one that flopped but wasn&apos;t actually the case. So with the English dub, whoever got into the studio first for the day basically got to dictate the jokes and how it was going to go.

  I heard that whoever showed up to the studio first got to improve their recorded lines first and everyone else had to just roll with it so the VAs were racing to show up first each day during production.

  So, some context you may have already been told, but a lot of people only half know the reality of things, so:<br><br>Ghost Stories was a normal kids... well, Ghost Stories style show, back in the day. Like an animated goosebumps. It was based off common school ghost stories and folk lore. The legend goes, the series did poorly in Japan, so they sold the license for pennies to the English dubbers, and told them they could do whatever as long as it sold, essentially. Just keep the names and overall plot intact. This is actually not so. The series was not only successful during its run, but topped charts for the kids animation airtime window for its network. it&apos;s remembered fondly, and now with modern auto-translation, I&apos;ve even seen threads on twitter of Japanese fans reminiscing about it.<br><br>But the American studio did change it, that is true. Similar, but even more extreme to how we treated Crayon Shin-chan, if you&apos;re familiar, we filled the whole show with a lot of improvised, crude humor. And to be honest, it&apos;s pretty fun. Me personally, I&apos;m the sort who believes dubs should be accurate, and I personally don&apos;t like how it&apos;s used to defend dub changes, especially given the myth around it is completely fabricated, but it is a fun time, and I&apos;ve watched it through a few times with friends and streamers I like. It&apos;s a fun tradition.<br><br>So, to summarize: Japanese series was for kids. Pretty basic kids horror. Well loved. We took that and gave it an American adult humor dub. It&apos;s a myth that we were allowed to do this due to low ratings/sales. The myth was started by the dubbing group that dubbed it, but it was likely a lie for marketing reasons with the actual ratings considered.

  Ghost stories is a yearly tradition for me ever October I rewatch the series and enjoy the chaos.

  Most people misunderstand how this happened. They think if flopped, so they could do whatever they want with it. That&apos;s only half true. It did NOT flop in Japan. In fact it even beat out Pokemon and DBZ for 1st place in some of its slots. There was a Dub before this one, and it was done seriously, and THAT&apos;s the version that flopped. They redid the Dub, and we got this masterpiece.

  The style of them writing the this dub by ad-libbing while trying to understand the plot reminds me of how Bad Lip Reading and Mystery Science 3000 were made.
