My uncle was among the men who held a key bridge to a help keep the German break through. His feet froze as he held that line and after was medevaced to England. His unit the 299th engineers company C, were the first men on Omaha beach. My, our American hero.

I grew up with uncles and aunts who were the men and women mentioned in this excellent retrospective. We kids just didn't think much about the war and what they did. Little could we imagine just what that was until now. Thank you so much and blessings to our heroic elder relatives..

I want to thank you for this extremely detailed explanation. I have family who served in WW2 and I met men who were in Bastogne. I am not certain there is a time when I have been more proud of my fellow Americans and what so many unsung heros were able to accomplish. Thank you for honoring them in such a dignified manner.

My uncle did not FIGHT AT BASTONE, NOR did he serve in the American army in WW II because in 1940 he enlisted into the Canadian airforce, and died in 945 on a return mission when his plane crashed into mountain. He fought FROM ENGLAND.

That kind of speed and coordination is exactly why American logistics became one of the most powerful weapons of World War II.

Thanks for this in-depth story of the Battle of the Bulge. My uncle was a member of the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne.

He remembered being trapped at Bastogne as being the “toughest, coldest, wettest, hungriest, and the meanest battle of them all”.

He said he still remembered, 50 years later, how cold it was and remembered sleeping in 6 inches of snow in a foxhole.

I asked him if they felt desperate. He replied, "no, we knew there were 4 million Allied on the ground in Europe and it was only a matter of holding out." He didn't go deep into the stories but said that guys were improvising in the defense of the town.

His unit crossed the Rhine River and eventually captured Hitler‛s “Eagle‛s Nest. He was able to obtain some of Hitler‛s personal stationery and used it to write a letter back home to my grandparents. My cousin had the original letter framed on his office credenza at his home.

The 506th “liberated” Goering’s wine cellar as well as the stack of bottles of other Nazi notables. My uncle was in the area until about the end of July before being moved out. He mustered out in December 1945 after returning to the U.S.
