Hello Story People! Thank you for stopping by on this episode of Story Surgery! I’m making this pinned comment to address some of the more recent questions that have started to make the rounds after the most recent wave of new folk finding their way here, namely about a follow up as well as providing sources for a particular element in this reworking. If you’d like to comment on the subjects about these topics in this pinned comment, feel free; try to keep it focused on these topics. I’m making this comment to help people with specific answers. With that, let’s get started.
________________

[ [ WHERE IS THE REST OF THE STORY? THIS ONLY COVERED THE BEGINNING? ] ]

The reason why I only focused on the openings of each of the separate stories (all of which are told in one sitting in chronological order to help establish where each story begins in their respective campaigns) was to prompt a dialog with everyone and ponder/discuss how and where people could take the story from where this video ends. Because of the nature of how people want to take things and make their own spin on it, I prompted several questions throughout the video overall to see what ideas people would do if they were in charge of certain aspects _(Time Travel Ideas, Gameplay Concepts, Character Progressions, etc.)_. I always found it fascinating how 100 people could take the same idea and make it their own by spinning it in a bunch of different ways. This leads me to a connective question…

[ [ WILL THERE BE A PART TWO TO THIS VIDEO? ] ]

It’s been asked a bit over the last two years, but recently people have been asking it en masse, so let’s hit the nail straight on: *YES. A Part 2 to the Story Surgery of Sonic 06 is in the works*; and has been for a while; I announced this a while back during a previous update video that I was going to make a Part 2 followup to the ideas presented here. I wanted to get a few other video ideas out beforehand before I went back to Sonic 06 to try and help with risking potential burnout about talking about one subject/topic. The other reason why I wanted to wait was so that people could share their own ideas and we could dedicate a section of a Part 2 talking about what people would like to see implemented and/or change as a means to have a discussion of what people liked in the original, in a potential reworking, as well as their own original concepts. This whole series is about Story Development overall, and having open discussions about what works with people, what doesn’t work, and why is important.
________________

[ [ WAS SONIC 06 ‘ACTUALLY’ A REBOOT? PEOPLE SAY IT NEVER WAS? ] ]

This question has come around a lot recently from people making the comments about how this game was not intended to be a reboot; that this idea is a community myth that gained legs, so I wanted to take a moment (... I say “moment” but as you can see, I type a lot) to work out what research I did independently that led me to use that as a stepping stone for why I refer to this game as such.

It's one of those "He said, She Said, They said" situation in terms of what it meant for the game in question and many articles used that as a spearhead for a headline that was catchy to the eye. There are a LOT of articles about Sonic 06 being a reboot of the series just as much as there are comments from users/fans who say that it isn't, so I'll do my best to try and condense my research down for the sake of the Youtube comment system.

For me, there were two elements I was using when making the comment of 06 being perceived as a ‘Reboot’ in a production sense. There's about to be a lot of URLs and stuff, so I'll do my best to try and break it down into the sources and quotes from said sources. ( My apologies if this comes off looking weird; YouTube's comment system has always made conversations really tricky at times. )

- - - Source One : The 2016 Interview with Sonic 06's Director - - -

One source I used was the 2016 Sonic Channel interview of O6's Director, Shun Nakamura, on the status and production of the game. [http://sonic.sega.jp/SonicChannelOld/creators/010/index.html] Now, I will acknowledge that the article is in Japanese and I was using a translator to read the article, which I know isn't 100% all the time; sometimes technology can break down barriers, other times it can lead to things being lost in translation. I'm going to cite the translations.

Specifically, it was the question asked about this game in question being called "Sonic The Hedgehog" in which the interviewer says:
[Interviewer: "It is said that it has returned to the origin because it is the 15th anniversary of Sonic's birth"].

Now, that's not terribly helpful because the phrase "It's said that..." doesn't provide sources by which the interview is referencing. (kinda like saying “People say” or “research shows”)

The answer that Nakamura gave was the following:
[Nakamura: "Since it is a next-generation machine, it was required to have the same impact as the change from 2D to 3D. If the title is too sequel, the user will have a sense of security, but the "expectation" will be weakened, and the next-generation machine will not be excited. Therefore, we will use the first title "SONIC THE HEDGEHOG" because it is a title that gives users the expectation of a new Sonic that has been reborn, and a title that allows development staff to create better works while feeling the weight of the title"]

"The expectation of a new Sonic that has been reborn."
Let's keep that in mind as we move on to...

- - - Source Two : Yuji Naka's Press Conference in 2005 - - -

The Second source I used as a stepping off point was from two articles from Sept 2005, one from Gamespot [https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps3-360-sonic-leads-wave-of-sega-announcements/1100-6132842/] that was posted on Friday, September 9th, 2005, to which I then cross referenced with an article from IGN [https://www.ign.com/articles/2005/09/09/sonic-the-hedgehog-goes-x360] that was posted on Thursday, Sept 8th, 2005 shortly after a special press conference Yuji Naka gave in the Late Evening of Thursday, September 8th, 2005. Both articles source Naka as saying the following statement:

[Naka: "We are proud to re-create our famous friend, Sonic, for a new generation of gamers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 ... With Sonic The Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than 15-years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The 'rebirth of Sonic' will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems."]

- - - An Examination of Words and Intent - - -

So, what do the phrases "...the expectation of a new Sonic that has been reborn" from Nakamura and "The 'rebirth of Sonic'" from Yuji Naka mean in their given contexts?

The choice of words from two different people being "Reborn" and "Rebirth" respectively means that, internally, there was this idea that this game was thought of as a revival of the formula; with Naka saying "we have gone back to our starting point" furthers the idea of going back to the beginning, which in turn conjures up the idea of what makes a Reboot what it is; a means to restart something with a different take, be it with new ideas, new structure, or with new advancements in technology that would allow for a more idealized interpretation of the story in particular. These were the elements that I used to forward the discussed element of Sonic 06 being a Reboot. Is it possible that their phrasing was meant in a stylistic choice purely based on aesthetic choices? A nod towards the franchise branching into different console(s)? A reimagining of the Sonic series overall? None of the above? All of the above? It's hard to say, and people to this very day argue about what the intent of Sonic 06 was supposed to be. Geez, it could go in circles forever, and lord knows it will, because here we are 17 years later and people still pick it apart.

Again, I know that people can (and will) argue that there's a chance that these sources are the result of mistranslation or miscommunication; heck, some would probably argue that this is an example of nit-picking for the sake of weighing a perspective to an argument. I know that people can argue it, but it was the foundation used for this specific element that I wanted to focus on.
________________

Hopefully this helps answer some of the more recent questions that have popped up. I thank you again for stopping by; hopefully you were able to find some entertainment both in the video itself as well as the conversations that arose!

story surgery: This would've been potentially way longer.
me: Bold of you to assume I wouldn't watch a 5+ hour video on a rewrite for sonic 06.

Anyone who has the courage and patience to rewrite sonic 06 with this much thought has my respect.

The implication that Sonic calls Shadow and Shadow ignores them is such a funny character thing

We can still have a similar, bittersweet moment to end Silver's story. Just instead of Blaze fading away because of taking Iblis into herself, it's Silver fading away because now that he's changed the future for the better, Silver as he is now ceases to exist. Kind of reminds me of Shadow's sacrifice at the end of Adventure 2, although Silver can still appear in later games, it just won't be the Silver Blaze knows, which will ironically flip the dynamic around if Blaze and Silver meet again. Blaze will know Silver, but this new Silver won't know her.

Even as a Geriatric, Blaze kicks a literal godly amount of ass.

I love this rewrite; it does the series way more justice than the original. Being that the rewrite has the benefit of hindsight, I'd like to propose the idea that since Solaris has abilities of time manipulation, Eggman's mission in Soleana could stand as a precursor to his plan in Sonic Generations to create the Time Eater

One idea I always had was to make Elise a cat, with the unspoken implication that Blaze was a descendant of Soleanna’s royal family. It would explain how Blaze can seal Iblis in her soul while Silver can’t, and also act as a nod toward her actual backstory as a princess from another dimension.

EDIT: But I’m a fan of Old Blaze’s design.
