  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgH-0FuwshA&amp;t=2490">41:30</a> A small but fascinating thing happening here that many non-South Africans might miss: when Trevor adds those little “sounds” while describing load-shedding and people moving through the shop, he’s actually using idiophones.<br>In many Bantu languages (Xitsonga, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Shona, etc.), idiophones aren’t just noises — they’re meaning-bearing sound expressions that vividly represent actions, movement, suddenness, completion, or atmosphere. They’re a normal and powerful storytelling tool.<br>For South African listeners, this instantly makes the scene more alive and familiar. For others, it might sound like he’s just making random noises. This is something Trevor can really only do here, because it relies on shared linguistic and cultural intuition, not just English words.

  I’m displaced due to the Russian-Ukrainian war and ended up in Cape Town for 1,5 years. That’s where I learned about Trevor Noah, watched all his specials. Nothing I was looking forward to more than his show in Cape Town in Aug-September 2023. Sadly I had to relocate to Kenya just 5 days prior. I kid you not, in Kenya I became a stand up comedian. (I’ve kinda stopped by/for now but am happy to remain part of Kenyan comedy community.) Seeing this show now is such an incredible gift. Thank you. South Africa to the world 🫶🫶🫶
