Watched Silent Running when I was in 5th grade. The movie never left my mind, it has a huge impact on me.

The really scary part about Colossus: The Forbin Project is that when engineers allow our current AIs to communicate freely with each other, the first thing they end up doing is creating their own language that we cannot understand. This movie was a warning.

In GATTACA, Jerome did not have an "accident" -- he came in second and tried to end his life (and failed to do that too). The pressure of being told you are genetically perfect was a secondary theme of the movie.

I recently rewatched Moon. Such a good movie. It really is a shame all these movies didn't do better at the box office, but too many people don't want to think when they watch movies.

I would add to this list Fahrenheit 451. This was one of the more meaningful movies to me during my youth. I recently went back to view it again and found it difficult to obtain. Was finally able to locate an old DVD in a public library. Its dystopian message about thought control by controlling publicly available information and a population addicted to meaningless social media is particularly salient in 2026.

Aniara blew me away. The haunting final scene has stayed with me for years.

The Europa Report is essentially a lift from a chapter in Arthur C Clarke's 2010: Odyssey Two

You're absolutely right about Aniara. It's so depressing you'll feel nihilistic for days afterward. There was a book sequel to Andromeda Strain which could be made into a movie.

Gattaca left me emotional towards the end. Good sci-fi movie. 👍

Strange Days is obviously worth mentioning: 17 millions at the box office with a budget of 42 - I can't think of a film that good that is nearly as unappreciated!

Unpopular opinion: Superhero movies are not science fiction, they are just fiction.
