The little thing on the back of the uniforms ( other than the towel) is a hand warmer for cold weather games.

Yeah they use a towel sometimes to keep the hands dry and not covered in mud, there's a lot of time your hands are in the dirt in football. But the little pouch thing on his back is to keep his hands warm for cold weather. Its the Buffalo Bills in that clip with the Cardinals.

This is one of the reasons soccer has never really caught on in the U.S. I'm not waving the American flag here, but can you imagine what the World Cup would look like if these NFL freaks had spent their entire lives playing soccer instead of football? These guys are just built differently. They'd be terrifying in almost any sport they chose.

If I can give you one piece of advice about picking an NFL team, don't pick one of the league's best teams. Most Americans root for their hometown team or one they have family ties to, but you get to choose. Pick a middle-of-the-pack team. Half the fun of being an NFL fan is the emotional roller coaster. Monday through Friday you're mad at your team. Saturday you convince yourself this is the week they turn it around. Sunday you completely lose your mind during the game. Then on Monday you become a "Monday Morning Quarterback," meaning you spend the day explaining how you would've coached or played better than the professionals. If you pick a team that wins all the time, you miss out on the full experience. Humans, for reasons nobody has satisfactorily explained, seem to enjoy being disappointed on a weekly schedule.

As for the little towels hanging off their backs, yes, they're actually towels. They're used to wipe sweat, rain, mud, or keep their hands dry before catching the ball. Some players also wear hand warmers, which I think is what you were calling a cushion. Over here we usually call those "muffs," like the old fur hand warmers women used to carry in the winter. Not sure if that's what you call them in the UK, but that's what they're called here. If they aren't using them, they just slide them around to the back out the way.

You ask about the pads a lot. Most of the speed guys, like wide receivers and defensive backs, usually wear nothing more than shoulder pads and a helmet. There are optional pads for your ribs, thighs, hips, and knees, but every bit of extra weight and bulk slows you down. When you're running 40 yards (37 meters) in 4.4 seconds, every tenth of a second matters. Quarterbacks and linemen usually wear more protection because they aren't relying on pure speed nearly as much.

"Can they interfere with the receiver?" No. Once he touches the ball, though, he's completely fair game.

One thing that's different in the NFL is that if there's a defensive penalty, the play keeps going. The officials throw the flag, but nobody stops until the play is over. Afterward, the offense gets to decide whether they want to accept the penalty and its yardage, or keep the result of the play.

For example, if I'm defending you 50 yards downfield and I interfere with you while the ball is in the air, the officials throw a flag. But you can still catch the ball and run it in for a touchdown. As the offense, you'd simply decline the penalty and keep the touchdown because it's the better outcome. If you don't complete the catch, then you'd almost certainly accept the penalty instead.

As for them basically throwing the ball carrier around, the rule is actually pretty simple. After every play, the ball is spotted wherever the BALL was when the player was ruled down or when his forward progress was stopped.

In the play from this video, the receiver caught the ball and was pushed forward, so the ball is spotted where he ended up. But if you're running forward and six defenders hit you, stop your progress, and then drive you backward 10 yards, the ball is still spotted at the furthest point you reached before they stopped you. Just because I can pick you up and carry you 30 yards in the wrong direction doesn't mean you lose those 30 yards. Otherwise, every tackle would turn into a contest to see who could drag somebody the farthest backward. Humans would absolutely exploit that loophole within about six minutes.

KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS and dont worry about offending anyone. @sharpshooterfishingguides on Insta, I would be happy to help you folks with anything USA. I love this stuff.

Players that handle the ball usually have the towel to keep hands dry. Running backs and receivers.

The little pillow is a hand warmer. In winter between the snaps they put their hands in the hand warmer to keep them warm because they're going to be handling the ball and don't want the fumble in the cold

The ball is spotted (after a tackle) where the ball was in relation to the field/yards when a player is considered 'down' or tackled. You are 'down' whenever a knee or elbow touches the ground, or of course if you step out of bounds, etc. The knee down rule comes into play a lot in a game also in terms of whether a player loses posession of the ball, for example a fumble. Often times they will review the play and determine that a player was technically down before the ball comes lose so they team who was on offense will retain control of the ball.
