The Elder Brain cut me off from the hive mind after I asked if the illithids ever got experimental with their tentacles

Immensly disapointed that the conclusion wasn't : "Thank you again to my wonderful channel members, you are the Illithids to my elder brain".

I like the implication of the Neothelid, as they imply that they are the "natural" state of the Mind Flayer tadpoles, since they are what happens if the tadpoles are left on their own to fend for themselves. These gigantic abominations are the natural state of the mind flayers if nothing gets involved in their life cycle and that is so cool.

the fact that a neothelid is the natural endpoint of a mindflayer tadpoles, they are probably what they were originally, maybe some particularlly ancient neothelid used its psionic powers and its own brood to turn people into its servants. Let that go on for long enough and you get mindflayers.

Also beaming concentrated brainrot into the mindflayer hivemind until their own brains explode

I’d make a mindflayer starve

One additional fun fact, mindflayers hate their undead counterparts due to the fact that most undead are immune to psychic powers. So if you see a group of Mindflayer hooligans readying baseball bats and tire irons, now you know why.
Now, Beholders next, please!

3:47 its actually pretty simple: most races have a high chance of either simply not surviving Ceremorphosis or ending up as weird mutants and not 1s the Illithid are ok with. Combine that with how few Tadpoles survive and it means Illithid have to be somewhat picky. Off the top of my head Giants are too big for a single Tadpole to complete the process but they dont have enough greymatter for 2 Tadpoles to survive and thats where Ettins come in, twice the heads means twice the brains which means JUST enough for Ceremorphosis to technically be successful. The reason I say technically is Psionically they are weaker than a normal Mind Flayer and slightly dumber(I think they have an 18 Int instead of 19) however they are significantly bigger and stronger so in the rare cases they are made they tend to act as a sort of Honor Guard for the Elder Brain. They are known as Ettin Ceremorphs(Ceremorphs being what the few "acceptable" mutants are called) and 1 head is sunken into the body and is in charge of motor control and the other is in charge of cognition and Psionics
