Zeljanica is very, very Serbian, my friend. Whoever told you it wasn't misled you. Made throughout the Balkans, but the Serbian version is it's own beautiful thing.

It's a shame you didn't get to try the original Karađorđeva steak at the restaurant in Zemun whose owner was the man who actually invented the recipe for this dish. On top of that, you would have heard the fascinating story of how the dish came to be. The restaurant is called "Mića's Homemade Cuisine" (Mićina domaća kuhinja).

The last time I was in Belgrade (end of October 2025) I had the opportunity to enjoy so many of the dishes shown here. I was with a Serbian friend of mine who wanted to try cinnamon buns. He found this small shop where they are made with different toppings. The shop is very small with only 6 or 7 tables on an upper floor. After you order your buns and coffee, you sit upstairs and just inhale the freshness of the baked goods. It was absolutely wonderful, so much so that returned for several breakfasts. I think the name of the bakery is Rollna, not too far away from the Botanical Garden. Without a doubt I will return there on my next trip to Belgrade.
