My first drive, in a scrap yard, crashed it into a crane! I was only 8 years old and my legs were too short to reach the pedals! My dad had one, and I'd watched what he did when he was driving, pressing the clutch, selecting the gears, pressing the accelerator... We travelled many a mile in that car, summer holidays in North Wales, then later visiting relatives in Hertfordshire, and holidays in Devon and Cornwall - no mean feat before motorways were built.

These I thnk as the Prefect were sold in Australia. Only a brave person ventured out of city environs into the wise open spaces on mostly unsealed roads that went on seemingly forever.

My mate has had the early model of this a 1937 Ford 10 7W, since the early 80s found it in a farmers field, did it up, and it is still in use today.

I was a pupil at secondary school in the 60s when I saw that the music teacher's Ford Popular was for sale. I mentioned it to my parents & it became the first car our family ever owned. At heart we were a railway family as both my Grandfathers were loco drivers in the Northeast. Train travel became untenable though after the Beeching Cuts & the Ford Popular became the families introduction to the open road. It was somewhat crowded if all the family was onboard though. Mum & Dad in the front & me, my 2 brothers & 2 sisters in the back. There were no seatbelt laws back then & such rear seat crowding was a recipe for squabbling. I think my father was relieved when he had the car to himself & he could take advantage of it in his use of it as a conveyance to work further afield. A vehicle like that has certain advantages over the modern car. It has a starting handle to assist in starting the engine if the battery isn't holding a charge well & its engine management is analogue, thus avoiding the potential pitfalls of a digital ignition system.

As a boy I was with my dad, following one of these, when we came to some left and right bends. It started to wobble, then just fell over.

Yes my father had a popular in Sri Lanka. I was a boy and I learned driving and all mechanics from it. I tuned the engine and when it want start I used to crank ir. It was very uncomfortable but very reliable. we had this for about 20 years.
