In this lesson, I'm sharing 4 kick drum grooves you can play along with right now — two 8th-note patterns and two 16th-note patterns — and showing you how to turn each one into a real bass line over a simple Gm7–C7 chord sequence. Grab your bass and play along with me. What you'll learn in this lesson: How to isolate a kick drum rhythm and match it exactly on bass Why locking in with the kick (not filling every space) is the key to solid timing How to layer a Gm7–C7 chord sequence over each groove How to add whole-step and half-step approach notes to turn a groove into a bass line The difference between 8th-note grooves and more advanced 16th-note grooves These 4 grooves come from Days 1, 3, 6 and 8 of the 10-Day Kick Drum Challenge inside eBass+ — so you can see exactly what our members work through, then take it further if you want the full 10-day version. It means playing the exact same rhythm as the kick drum pattern, so your bass note and the kick hit at the same time and mesh together as one sound. It's one of the most effective ways to build tight, reliable timing on bass guitar. What chord sequence is used in this lesson? All four grooves are played over a simple two-bar Gm7 to two-bar C7 sequence, which keeps the harmony easy to follow while you focus on rhythm and placement. Do I need to read music to follow along? No — everything is demonstrated by ear, and the free PDF includes standard notation and tab if you want a written reference. What's the difference between the 8th-note and 16th-note grooves in this video? The first two grooves divide each beat into two (8th notes), while the last two divide each beat into four (16th notes), giving the kick drum more places to land within the bar and making the timing challenge progressively harder. Where do these grooves come from? They're taken from Days 1, 3, 6 and 8 of the 10-Day Kick Drum Challenge, a bonus challenge available inside eBass+.
