Here’s my story: My son got married in 2023 and I made my mother of the groom dress. For another son’s wedding in 2025, I took off the sleeves on that dress, added beads along the neckline, added more appliqués and altered it. I loved the opportunity to wear it again and I felt great in it!

I am German but have been living in the States for over thirty years. We have a saying in German: Vorfreude ist die schönste Freude. Anticipatory joy is the most beautiful joy!

The point about "fantasy spending" hit me hard. I used to buy all these items for the person I wanted to be — the person who cooks elaborate meals, dresses boldly, goes to the gym five times a week. Once I accepted who I actually am, my spending dropped dramatically and I finally felt at peace with my choices. Such an underrated concept that rarely gets talked about in personal finance. Thank you for this, Vera!

My son and I did a stay cation a few years ago. Everyday we went to a different museum here in town, movies one afternoon. Always came home for dinner and slept in our own beds. The memories we made that week were worth it.

Best part of staycation is that you can guarantee that the bed is comfortable & just to your liking...and there's no packing to do - which I hate!!

I have always hated clothes shopping, so I wear the same things all the time. I'm a teacher, so I made myself my own uniform. I have 5 shirts for cold weather and 5 shirts for warm weather, and I just rotate through them during the work week with the two or three work pants that I also have. My students wear uniforms, so whenever they point out that I'm wearing the same thing again, I just point out that they're also wearing the same thing again. Most of my clothes are older than my 10-year-old students!

My sister loves eating out all the time and then complains about not having enough spending money for a concert. I've finally gotten to the point where I just bluntly tell her that I'm not wasting my money on the constant eating out because it's too much money, and I'd rather save that money for future travel or concert tickets.

My husband and I usually enjoy taking our kids to a family member's house, and then doing our own staycation. But this Valentine's day, my mother-in-law had a really fun idea; she came to our house and stayed with our kids, and let my husband and I take her apartment (in a different city, a couple of hours away) for the weekend. So fun!

Always smart to live below your means. When we purchased our home we opted for a comfortable mortgage payment that could easily be afforded on one salary even though we both worked full time. We have everything we need & we can sleep at night without worrying about money.

I'm 77 and I go to a yoga class four days a week and do weights and cardio at home. I do it more for the social connection because I'm a total introvert and would stay at home all the time. Not good at my age.
