  You could've used an ND filter to reduce the overall light first then got out of high speed sync which in turn would've granted your flash waaaaay more actual output... Then did everything else the same.

  This simple method and its special effect shown in this video is the well-known so-called &quot;American Night&quot; method.<br><br>The term &quot;American Night&quot; or &quot;American night exposure&quot; is not a standard photographic technique, but the concept is associated with the &quot;Day-for-Night&quot; method, a very common film technique invented and used in American television and cinema to simulate nighttime scenes shot during the day. <br>This method involves underexposing the image referring to the overall location or just the background, using spot or at least more direct lighting for the subject, and enhancing blue tones to create the illusion of night, often resulting in a somewhat artificial appearance due to visible daylight elements like clouds or hard shadows. You can do all this even with a simple manual or TTL system speedlight, and without High Speed Sync (HSS) if your camera and speedlight don`t offer it. Manually adjust the zoom of the speedlight to a significantly narrower effective range, independent of the lens focal length used, to get such a more direct or spot lighting for the subject ... or with the also well-known DIY &quot;Pringle`s&quot; tube snot light modifier mounted on the speedlight`s head flash output to control and direct flash output to reduce glare and create focused lighting only on your subject`s body or face<br>To enhance the night feel and to create a special kind of drama, the white balance of the camera should be adjusted to a cooler setting, such as Tungsten or Incandescent, to turn warm daylight into a blue-toned night scene and using an Orange CTO gel on the speedlight flash to warm up the subject’s skin tones and giving it back a more natural look again, balancing the cool background and as the main determining visual contrast. A simple piece of suitable Orange CTO filter foil taped to the front of the flash or speedlight head is perfectly sufficient and all you need.<br>This method is also well suited to adding more pep to rather boring locations or backgrounds in lack of better alternatives, which then can be more exciting in portrait and people photography or also in so-called &quot;lost places&quot; or &quot;industrial&quot; photography for instance.<br>Pros use this method also to create a so-called &quot;postcard blue&quot; sky.<br><br>Locations and setups with an interesting cloudy or even stormy sky in the background often inspire me to create this &quot;American Night&quot; effect for a unique kind of visual drama in the results even though I don&apos;t use or need my speedlight in this case – unlike in people and portrait photography – because I don&apos;t have to or want to compensate for anything, for example in landscape photography ... and it also produces a corresponding &quot;wow&quot; effect in many viewers of these photos.

  You need to have the groundskeeper turning on the lights around the building to make it more convincing that it is night time.
