They're actually cassette players and they're audio cassettes, but it's adorable when you call them VHS tapes.

So, this movie happened between season 2 and 3 of the TV show. This was a big deal because, since the show was basically made to sell toys, they killed off most of the old characters in the movie to make room for the new characters/toys. Fans...hated this, heh. So much so that they made an episode called "The Return of Optimus Prime" to bring him back. Also, this movie just returned to theaters for the 40th anniversary, which they're calling "The Apology Tour" with a bonus Optimus short film at the end, to make up for killing him off in the movie. Sadly, that short is the last performance of Peter Cullen, so it makes it extra sad.

Hasbro SEVERELY underestimated how traumatizing losing Optimus would be to kids everywhere. 😂

Prime's solo assault to retake Autobot City is the most bad ass shit ever. He Drives full speed into the Decepticons, running a bunch of bitches down like they were nothing. Transforms and flips into the air while shooting, taking out a few more waste men, lands on his feet still fucking dropping bastards left and right all while music blasts out about how cool and fucking awesome he is! To this day you can say "one shall stand and one shall fall..." to grown men in their 40's and they will break down weeping, remembering their '2nd dad'......
