  It's somewhat comforting to know that even in the Medieval era, people complained about paying taxes and poorly maintained roads.  Some things never change.

  I grew up in the northern highlands of Scotland. When I was a young lad, walking everywhere was the norm, sometimes for 10 miles to the nest village, following sheep tracks in the hills rather than the road which often took a longer route. I came back from a dance one night in Bettyhill and walked to the river, with my friend, we took off our clothes and waded the river up to our chests in water, holding our clothes above our heads, then walked the last 8 miles home over the hills. People in that area had been walking these routes for centuries, and in Gaelic many places, rocks, corners, hill crests and the like have their own descriptive names. Sadly, that way of life has largely died out now, but fond memories for me.

  I've listened to over a 100 people talk about medieval stuff. The way you explain things and the tone of your voice are pleasant because you're teaching. You're not telling us and being condescending. Bravo sir

  This video has me desiring a video game about medieval travel! Imagine something like Truck Simulator, but you're a pilgrim, general traveler, merchant, etc. with "accurate" travel distances and survival.

  Awesome video, like always. When I worked at a hostel in Athens, we hosted a guy who was doing a pilgrimage from the middle of France to Jerusalem, on foot. He was over 6 months in, 3 to go! He arrived a month ago, then continued to walk. Bernard. He doesn't speak any english, only French. Cool, honest, gentle, middle-aged guy.

  There's something majestic about what you said about people seeing the world around them changes they were walking. Nowadays everyone is stuck to their phone or just takes  vehicular travel. We done SEE the world around us
