  This happened in my family when I was child. Im 85 now. It's why I will be cremated.

  If the remains are embalmed, I don't believe being buried alived is possible.

  This is where the terms "dead ringer" and "graveyard shift" come from.  Because people were being buried who were still alive, they'd have bells attached to a rope that the "dead (not dead)" person could ring if they woke out of their coma in a casket.  The graveyard shift was a person who worked at night to listen for any bells.  Imagine being alone in a graveyard in the dead of night and one of those bells begins to ring.  Talk about creepy!

  Back in 1932 when my tribe was moving from the old reservation to the new one, my great grandpa, grandpa and other men were in charge of removing the old outer boxes to the new reservation to be re-buried, he talked about how some of the boxes turned to saw dust and how others had scratches on the inside. In 1932 my grandma was 12, she married my grandpa in 1936 when she was 16 and grandpa was 28. My 3 brothers became grave diggers, and I became a Funeral Director with a degree in embalming and a cremation technician. We grew up right next to the cemetery, and I've only seen one exhumation in it, the girl was in her mid 20's and she had been murdered, she left behind a cute little 4-year-old girl. I'm from the Diegueño tribe also known as Kumeyaay, we're in the east San Diego area.
