He Was Broke And In Debt. Then 2 Pairs of Gucci Changed His Life | Greg Grenfield

What do you do when times are hard but you have valuable things sitting in your cupboard? For Greg Grenfield, the answer was two pairs of pre-owned Gucci shoes. They belonged to him and his wife. Greg had fallen on hard times, needed to make money, and decided to photograph the shoes and list them on Instagram. They sold. Then something clicked. What started with two pairs of shoes would become WeBuyBrands, now one of South Africa’s biggest players in the pre-owned luxury market. In this episode of Hustle IRL, Greg joins us to unpack the journey from those first Instagram listings to building a rapidly growing business in an industry driven by something far deeper than handbags, watches and sneakers. We talk about the psychology of luxury. Why are people willing to spend enormous amounts of money on a logo? Why does owning Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Rolex or other luxury brands change how people feel about themselves? Is luxury really about quality, or is it about status, identity and belonging? And what happens when the resale market makes products that were once reserved for the wealthy accessible to a much bigger audience? Greg also opens up about the difficult period that led to the creation of WeBuyBrands, the realities of entrepreneurship, spotting an opportunity hiding in plain sight, building trust in the pre-owned luxury market, and what it takes to scale a business from almost nothing. This is a conversation about much more than luxury. It is about survival. Opportunity. Human psychology. And what can happen when you take the thing sitting in your cupboard and decide to do something with it. 🎙️ GUEST: Greg Greenfield, Founder & CEO of WeBuyBrands In this episode: • How WeBuyBrands started with two pairs of Gucci shoes • Greg’s journey through financial hardship • Turning an Instagram listing into a business • The rise of the pre-owned luxury market • Why people buy luxury goods • Status, identity and consumer psychology • Building trust when selling high-value products • Entrepreneurship and recognising opportunities • Scaling WeBuyBrands in just three years • The future of luxury resale in South Africa If you enjoy honest conversations about entrepreneurship, business, money and what it really takes to build something from nothing, subscribe to Hustle IRL.
