38 Years Alone in the Arctic: The Mystery of the Ghost Ship

They abandoned the SS Baychimo in the Arctic in 1931 — but the empty ship kept turning up for nearly 38 years. The Baychimo became one of the most mysterious abandoned ships in Arctic history, disappearing into the ice and being sighted again and again. In 1931, the SS Baychimo became trapped in the Arctic ice near Alaska. Her crew eventually left the ship behind, believing she could not be saved. But the story didn't end there. The ship survived the Arctic winter and was found again — empty and frozen into the sea ice. Over the following decades, hunters, sailors, pilots, and explorers reported seeing the abandoned vessel in different locations across the Arctic. People boarded her. Valuable cargo was recovered. Attempts were made to reach or move her. And then, somehow, the Baychimo would disappear again. In 1962, Inuit observers reportedly saw the ship once more. In 1969, the Baychimo was reportedly found frozen into the ice for the final known sighting — 38 years after her crew had abandoned her. But where did she go? And how could a 1,300-ton steel cargo ship survive for decades in one of the harshest environments on Earth? This is the true story of the SS Baychimo, the abandoned Arctic ship that became known as a ghost ship. From the 1931 Arctic blizzard to the mysterious sightings that followed, this documentary explores what happened to the Baychimo, why she survived for so long, and what may have finally happened to her. Watch until the end for the strange connection between the Baychimo and a collection of Arctic artifacts discovered decades later in a museum drawer.
