Your Water Heater Has a Part That Rots on Purpose — Check It Before It's Gone

Mi amigo, last time I told you something honest about flushing your water heater: it may not add a single year to the life of that tank. Today I want to show you the part that actually does. Hanging down inside your water heater right now, in the water, there is a long metal rod that is being eaten alive. That is not a fault. That is its job. It is called a sacrificial anode, and it is the most honest name for any part in your whole house — it is built to be destroyed so that your tank is not. And here is the thing almost nobody knows: when that rod is finally gone, the water starts eating the steel tank instead. That is when a heater rusts through and becomes a new heater plus installation, always at the worst possible moment. After thirty years of building and fixing houses, this is the one check I would put ahead of almost anything else on that tank. And I want to be clear up front — this is a CHECK. Plenty of people pull this rod out, look at it, and put it straight back in because it has years of life left. That is a good result, not a wasted afternoon. Gas: dial to PILOT. Electric: breaker OFF or unplug it. • Close the cold supply, then open a hot tap to bleed the pressure off. • Drain only a COUPLE OF GALLONS — not the whole tank. Two reasons: so water does not pour out of the top when the rod comes out, and because the weight of the water is what holds the tank still while you break that rod loose. • The water is hot. Run the hose to a floor drain or outside. • Magnesium is FLAMMABLE. If you cut a rod to length, use a hand hacksaw — never a powered saw. • Go slow breaking the rod loose. You do not want to snap that fitting off the top of the tank. • Only turn the heat back on once the tank is full, repressurised, and you have checked for leaks. • I am a builder, not a licensed plumber.
