I feel like part of Vale's longevity was how little he high sided. He obviously had the big one where he broke the leg but for the most part his style preserved his body.

I had a (somewhat) similar injury to J-Hop where I dislocated my hip and subsequently shattered my femoral head… which in turn resulted in a cracked pelvis. There were times I thought I’d rather not ever walk again because the rehabilitation was so tremendously painful and taxing.

This was just one of the 20+ additional cracked bones and surgeries I required throughout my time aboard a bike (I shan’t call it a career).

All that, and I never even made it to national level racing. By the time I was 30, I was as good as disabled.

I still can’t get through a metal detector 😂😂

But my wife is right… I would do it all again, because I’m nuts.

Unfortunately the side effects/ lingering injuries get worse the older you get. I’m pushing 60 and the injuries from my youth remind me daily I’m not going to ever be done with pain until I’m gone.

Some days are worse than others and when you’ve been through injuries it mentally toughens you up so you know how to cope.

Stay healthy and keep moving. It helps!

One thing to consider with Marc Marquez is that he has had more crashes than ANY other rider in MotoGP history!
He is regularly the rider with the most crashes in any season. He's been incredibly fortunate to not injure himself badly up until his arm injury. His diplopa issues aside.
Not counting testing and preseason, he's racked up around 300 crashes.
God knows what he'll be like in his 40's. No doubting his commitment!

The part about the age is true. I remember dreaming about being an F1 pilot, a MotoGP racer or a fighter jet pilot. I've always loved speed and adrenaline but at the same time I've always been calculated and cautious. Due to financial situation of my family I never became any of that and it remained almost a painful dream - the realisation that I'll never be one of them. But probably around the age of 30 I started realising that we only see one side of the coin. We see the races, the emotions, the fame and riches but in reality it's a daily routine just like with any other job, just different. Like John said - you travel, you crash, you hurt, you have ups and downs and it's not just some fairy tale that you think it is when you're younger.

One other thing I realised is that - I shouldn't be thinking I'll never be a racer or a pilot. I am something and someone else. I have a successful software development career, I'm good at what I do and I have found a place in this life. People racing will never be as good at developing software and I'll never be as good at racing and we both have our place in this world doing different jobs and none of the professions is better or worse.

It's important to remember your own worth so to say and not just dream about pretty pictures on your TV screen.

14:00 F1 drivers have it easy compared to MptoGP riders. And, as far as traveling, the F1 guys have the comfort of private jets, almost all of them, because even the ones that do not own one, often hitch rides with the ones that do. Or fly private with rich team leaders like Toto Wolff or Zac Brown, while almost every MotoGP rider has to endure the airport hardships in commercial flights.
