  Eleanor was a very interesting woman. At one time she represented all of modern France excluding Normandy into England through Henry II.   Her children became the powers of this area of Europe but often did not get along and it appears she was the one who kept things from total chaos after the death of Henry II when she was released from her captivity.  She was a complex woman in the very difficult unstable world of the 12th century following in the footsteps of William the Conqueror’s wife who was also a woman born to nobility who  had considerable power.

  Great podcast I love the story of Eleanor of Aquataine I must admit I still see in my mind the portrayal of Katherine Hepburn of Eleanor in the movie Lion in Winter which is one of my favourite movies of all time

  I enjoyed this very much. But I have one quibble with your fairly glib implication that Henry was a kind of mama's boy.  Elanor was impressive, capable, no doubt beautiful and surely smart.  But Matilda was a force to be reconned with. Her history as an actor in English politics was second to none.  If I were her son, and King of England, I would consult her routinely.

  Eleanor was by far one of the most incredible women in Europe history. Only woman to reign as queen in two different countries, mother of kings, going on a crusade, living into her 80's and surviving multiple pregnancies, jailed by her second husband for 15? years.  Another candidate for most interesting woman is IMHO Jaquetta of Luxembourg.
