I wonder what the problem with the metal bit was.

Calculate pi on the Moon? Surely you should have calculated pi in the sky instead.

The maximum thickness for a letter is ¼". After that, it's a parcel. I'm guessing that's the root of the shipping problem.

I think Shanks used Machin's formula for Pi/4 : as [ 4xArctangent (1/5) - Arctg(1/239) ] ... Is-it the slowly converging but relatively convenient for hand calculation method your team attempted to use, too ?

So, you got to 139.
As a number, it’s a bit interesting (as you know).

139 is not only a prime number, it’s a twin prime. Its twin is 137 and (again, as you know) was said by Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman to be placed on the wall of anyone who thought they knew a lot.

Richard Feynman said that "all good theoretical physicists put this number up on their wall and worry about it" in reference to 137 (specifically about 1/137) the Fine Structure Constant.

Clickbait! 👎 The manual calculation of Π was not explained, and the "on the moon" method was only mentioned. 😠 I would have expected better from Matt Parker.
