A 4-inch (or 3-inch) Model 629 revolver in a pancake holster on a stout belt leaves both hands free for scrambling on the trail, working, fishing, etc and it won't weigh you down too much, and it can be drawn quickly, so very handy - and with good hard cast flat nose rounds it still can handle bear business in an emergency.

Recommending that BFR revolver is ridiculous. With that long barrel you would be lucky to get it out of a chest holster if a bear was on top of you. Given a choice between the 2 guns I would pick my Winchester Model 94 in 44 Magnum. 10 shots and working a lever action is a hell of a lot faster than cocking that monster revolver. I guess you never heard the expression "A BB that hits the target is more effective than a cannon shell that misses".

Gotta question... Why would an intelligent human go for protection from a BEAR with a side arm? That's how y'all become the video of "what not to do"!!
