Jaba was a bank robber turned political activist? That sounds like a certain other Georgian with the almost-rhyming nick-name Koba who is known for robbing banks among other things, but he had a bigger mustache

Jaba Ioseliani was a "thief in law", a figure of criminal authority. Then, he was robbed of that title and became a leader of "Mkhedrioni", a militirzed formation primarily composed of ex-felons and street wise tough guys. They were pretty much brutal. They took part in territorial conflicts and eventually tried to blow up Eduard Shevardnadze, the president of Georgia at that time, however, he survived a d put an end to their existence.

Some of the things were lies or specifically packaged issues, but the issue of Zviad Gamsakhurdia's death is mentioned so casually in the background. This is the same moment when you finish the ending of one of the main characters by simply dying. 21:25

It’s surprising that Russian involvement and its interests in the region were not emphasized enough. In the end, a question was raised, what makes these conflicts unique and unresolved to this day. One answer would be: They occurred right on Russia’s border. Looking at the map, both Abkhazia and South Ossetia (unlike Adjara) provide some of the very few passages into the South Caucasus. For Russia, it was a matter of strategic importance to ensure it did not lose control and make at least one of the sides desperately dependent. This meant preventing reconciliation, perpetuating tension. They were supplying both sides and then played a humanitarian role. Just like the US first provides weapons that kill Gaza population and then opens so called "aid centers" for them. Empires learn from each other. They manipulate. Let's never forget Russia is an Empire and as every Empire it acts on the code: Divide and rule.

Bro, I appreciate the video, and I understand these Georgian names can be tricky...but, in "Gam" - "sa" - "khurdia", the second 'a' is after the 's'. That's a gimme.

As a Georgian, I am glad for such a thorough and detailedvexplanation of this extremely complex and deep-rooted conflict, although the bad side of Georgia was WAAAY further highlighted than the bad side of the separatists. Both were almost equally to blame for the incident, be it Gamsakhurdia's fascism, Shevardnadze's chaotic coup, Russia's open support to instigate further havoc and the separatist states' lunacy and physical inability to cooperate in any matter ever.

Indeed though, the myth of ''peaceful'' Soviet collapse is almost as great an American lie as their percieved ''benevolence.'' I'd love to see you do an episode of the Artsakh/Karabakh war next, it's a conflict with even deeper ethnic tensions and historic baggage than our own conflict, with all out wars in the region starting way back from mid stages of WWI...

Also here's the hall of fame of name butcherings... They were crazy XD 2:33 ''Chachavaze,'' ''GamASkhurdia,'' 8:01 ''Beghedroni,'' ''Makedroni'' 9:48 ''EKHtrioni'' 12:56 ''Behedrioni'' (Damn I've never heard a word be butchered in a unique way so many times in my life).
