My son was born in the Gilbert Bain and I live in the north of the second most northerly island. It’s a place like no other. The population of Shetland is now 23,000. Children in the islands who are at much smaller and remote schools are taught very early about their culture, traditions, and use of practical skills like sewing, fishing, working the land, cooking,
swimming, sea safety, and the communities are very tight knit and traditional. Children are raised in communities.
The difference in quality of education compared to schools in England and elsewhere in Mainland Scotland is just miles ahead. Children are mature, responsible, well attuned to their surroundings, active and intelligent. Often they start working the land or the sea young, their outlook and quality and experience of actual down to earth life is exceptional.

My wife and I lived in Shetland (on the island of Trondra) for 10 years in the mid-1970s and early 1980s. Two of our (three) children were born in the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick and I taught in Scalloway Junior High School and the Anderson High School. I spent a couple. of nights on the Nil Desperandum and learned why I could never be a fisherman! Many memories of these wonderful isles and their remarkable people!

What an informative documentary. No focus on a TV personality but a genuine survey of life and industry in Shetland.

Casually describing the new way of fishing as a good thing, but set to become the most destructive form of fishing we've ever known, destroying sea beds for decades afterwards.

Some research says the Wavecrest (LK 276), a pioneering 1969 steel-hulled purse seiner/trawler from Shetland revolutionized the local pelagic industry. Outfitted with advanced hydraulic equipment and powerful engines, the Wavecrest operated with immense success for over 28 years, with its crew becoming highly profitable before the vessel was decommissioned in the late 1990s.
The crew of the Wavecrest (LK 276) earned significant, often record-setting, financial returns during the peak of the Scottish fishing boom, largely due to operating a state-of-the-art steel purse seiner under a share-based compensation model. Continuous reinvestment in the vessel, including upgrading to a 850-horsepower engine and extending the hull by 15 feet to install RSW tanks, allowed the crew to maximize catches and secure generational wealth, according to the vessel's operational history.
I'm very happy for those men they seem like they deserved a win.
