He was always "on" for his audience. He kept his depression to himself, although he did talk about his substance abuse. If you want to see something really amazing, there is a Carson episode with both Robin and Jonathan Winters together that just killed Carson.

Carson was a comedy genius, and genius recognizes genius.  I think Robin knocked his socks off in person once Johnny realized how much of what Robin was doing was pure stream of consciousness.  I saw Robin live around this time. The jokes were just fighting each other to see which one could make it to his mouth first. They were some of the best concerts I've ever seen and some of the most exhausting (keeping up was hard work).  Robin was very nervous. This was his first time on Carson and, in this era, Carson could make or break a comedian.  If Johnny liked you, you made it.

Check out Robin Williams's movie "Good Morning Vietnam!" They recorded hours of him riffing and selected what they wanted for the movie scenes.

No matter what late night show it was, whether I watched it or not, when I knew Robin Williams was going to be on as a guest, I would definitely watch!

Find the interview Robin Williams did outside with his mother. You will instantly know where he got his sense of humor.

This is what weeknight late night television used to be and what every late night host since Johnny Carson retired in 1992 has been trying and epically failing to do. Johnny's last show with guests was the night before his last actual broadcast, and his two guests were Robin Williams and the Divine Miss M...Bette Midler whose final song actually physically moved Johnny Carson to tears.

You need to see Robin's appearances on the Craig Ferguson Late Late Show. Robin's pace was so quick even Craig could not keep up.
