I knew Eddie in the 1960s when he and Betty had The Shenley
Lodge Country House Club where a friend of mine ran the card table, gambling laws had recently changed and it was a popular place with people from the film studios at Boreham Wood Elstree. Eddie was a charming host and some of the characters there were pretty colourful. I remember one night well after drinking hours someone looked out of the curtains and saw the local police car in the drive, there was a very hurried tidy up of the tables and drinks not swallowed in haste tipped into plant pots as we awaited their knock on the door,
When it eventually came the chap who answered the door came back in and we asked what happened. 'Oh he just said good evening Sir we'''l'l be off now.' and they drove away up the drive. I said that was a close call Eddie and he replied 'No just tactful there's too many JPs here playing cards.
I was only a young lad then and it was all a bit of fun it was only later after the film and Macintyre's book that I realised that the stories he used to tell were to a fair extent true and what an important contribution he made to the war and in saving lives.
