A people whose men wear veils and whose women have their faces uncovered. Whose maternal lineages, according to genetic analysis, trace back to the Iberian Peninsula eight to nine thousand years ago. Whose alphabet—Tifinagh—derives directly from the script of the Garamantes, that forgotten civilization that dug underground tunnels fifty meters deep to extract fossil water in the Libyan Sahara. The Tuareg are one of the most fascinating and least understood peoples in human history. They are also, genetically, one of the most paradoxical. In this video, we trace their history—from the Green Sahara of the Holocene to the armed rebellions of the 1990s, passing through the tomb of Tin Hinan in Abalessa and the foggaras of Garama.
