Also a mantra to live by: You don't have a backup unless you can restore it. ALWAYS test your backups. 20 years as a Database admin.

One addition:<br>When recovering data from a partially corrupt drive NEVER recover to uncorrupted parts of the same drive as you might overwrite the very data that you are trying to recover.

I make sure to always use 3-2-1 backups. Three copies of my data, in two folders, on my one computer.

There are two types of people - those who back up their important files, and those who will learn to back up their important files.

I can't stress enough how important to KEEP A CURRENT BACKUP OF EVERYTHING that's important to you or your company. <br>NOTHING BEATS A GOOD BACKUP.

Back in the 90s a PhD student walked into my office with a 3.5" floppy disk and asked "Is this going to be Ok if I leave it in my car in long term parking at the airport?" <br><br>"I dunno", I said, "What's on it?"<br><br>"Oh it's my dissertation."<br><br>Yes it was the one copy representing years of her life and many thousands of dollars of tuition. We immediately made several backups of it, and I hope she's doing well whereever she ended up. Recovery tools are cool but there's never been any smart substitute for backups.

I am a contractor for several companies. Several years ago, one of them calls and says that their onsite server died. They were able to restore the base system, but their entire sales and customer database was gone. I asked about backups, and he hands me an old hard drive, and says “here is the backup, but we can’t restore it”. I did some digging and found that they had backed up multiple copies of the software that they were using, but no actual data. 10 years and no one checked to make sure backups were restorable. It almost put them out of business.

A few things to note.<br><br>Don't power on the drive until you're ready to attempt to recover. <br><br>Don't save data that you want to recover on the same drive. That should be obvious. EVEN if that part of the drive has no issues.<br><br>If using tools that don't have a read-only mode, there's a chance to overwrite said file or files you want.

Jay this software saved me hours. While installing a 4 drive raid. I forgot to unplug my 10TB bkup drive, and deleted its partition. Music , movies photos etc gone. 20 hours later over 38000 files recovered. Cheers

Used Recuva multiple times many years ago, but it's always entertaining seeing Jay catching up with some software he doesn't know, even though it's mind boggling he's never had a need for it before.

Jay - that drive looks to be an Intel H10. One of those Optane cached drives. It would explain why things look so funky. It would also explain why some of the files cannot be recovered as they are not on the optane but the NAND. If you can get your hands on another of the same model laptop for cheap - I would try putting the drive in it and see what happens. With any luck you didn't end up ruining the file permissions and it just boots.

Had a friend who was an award-winning photographer. He called and asked me to come over for a minor issue he was having with his computer. It was minor and easily sorted, but then he said his WD 500k external was "acting up". This is in the era of spinning drives, and it was going "click, click", I said this was not good and took it home, stripped it out of its case, and connected it to my system. I was able to connect and read. So, it had been a long day, and my first thought was, "The drive is ok," and it was the WD case hardware that was causing the trouble. Then I thought I can finish this up in the morning. I had a lucky second thought, "Maybe I should just justcopy off all his images and get it done". I never got that drive to work again. Lesson learned "SAVE IT NOW! "
