Getting one's teeth shaven down must be one of the worst sensory nightmare type shit ever. Eugh.

As someone (from EU) who has had braces for 3 years when I was a teen and a mom who is a dental hygienist/dentist assistant, here are some verbatim infos which she told me when I was hyperfixated on my teeth because of the braces:
-> Your natural grown up teeth are ALWAYS the best option, especially compared with temporary fix-ups like crowns or veneers (since yes, these require tedious maintenance); the enamel quality of natural/permanent teeth simply CANNOT be replicated.
-> Natural teeth have both shades and undertones, like your skin. Your teeth may be lighter (A1) or darker (D4), but on a scale that may be closer to different undertones: yellow (B), brown (A) or grey (C/D). These undertones and shades are universal in humans and come from genetics (even if they can be influenced by exterior causes like smoking or parts of your diet). The fact that your teeth are stained is, to some extent (too much tartar deposit, nutrition deficiencies etc...), absolutely normal. Moreover, your teeth are not uniformly coloured; natural canines get more yellow/brown/grey than other types of teeth and the lighter tooth shade that exists in nature is that of milk teeth (A on the shade scale). This is why these celeb/influencer ultra bright veneers look so weird and fake: their colouring is uniform on all teeth and they sport a shade which is lighter than that of MILK TEETH, which simply does not happen in nature when you are an adult. Also, natural teeth are not square at the bottom, unlike unshaven crowns/veneers that celebs/influencers somehow still get.
-> Tooth shade gets darker as you age (again, natural process).
-> Having crooked or slightly overriding teeth does not mean that your teeth automatically require heavy orthodontics. It is true that straighter teeth are easier to brush/floss etc so, with good oral hygiene, they can prevent you from developing deposit build up leading to cavities, gum diseases etc... However, if you have crooked/overriding teeth, are persistent with your oral hygiene (you really insist with brushing/flossing in those nooks and crannies) and you get regular dentist check-ups (ideally every two years according to my mom, but even I find it difficult to get and pay for an appointment this often), you are good to go.
-> Brushing your gums is as, if not more, important than brushing your teeth and is the foundation of good oral hygiene. Gums are blood supplied and as with every other blood supplied part of your body, blood circulation must be stimulated for better health (in this case, makes for stronger gums that support your teeth better and do not bleed easily).
-> Mouth washes are not recommended for daily/usual oral hygiene (unless you are doing aftercare for mouth surgery you just had) since they kill both bad and good bacteria. A too frequent usage of mouth wash can upset or destroy your buccal flora and make you more prone to mouth/teeth infections. Flossing is a great daily habit to integrate though (mom, I swear, one of these days, I will be flossing every day, unlike now haha).
-> Neglecting your oral health can lead to health risks/complications in your whole body and will affect other organs (as people have pointed out in the comments already: your heart for example).
-> DO NOT underestimate the pain that teeth/gums afflictions can cause; they are some of the worst pains that you can get since they often radiate in the whole head (so before getting cosmetic dentistry done which requires heavy upkeep, consider the recurring pain). I mean I was already hurting beyond function when I was with braces, so I cannot imagine getting ALL OF YOUR TEETH shaven down and covered with crowns/veneers that have to be replaced every ten years. A NIGHTMARE.
-> Finally, my mom always says that having healthy natural teeth is one of the biggest gifts/luxuries in life, especially as you get old, so treasure them and treat them kindly (and when I say healthy I mean all teeth: straight, crooked, big, small, stained or overriding because they are all perfectly healthy and cute when you care for them and when you do not put unneeded veneers or crowns on them).

The weirdest part is that most of these celebrities already had perfect teeth!

Every time I watch an older movie, the actors have such adorable, imperfect, personable smiles. It's one of the first things I notice, and I love that older look so much 😭

I never trust dentists who suggest damaging healthy teeth just for aesthetics or their benefits. To me, it looks like veneers are ruining their lives, not just their faces.

The pursuit of perfection sounds so exhausting. I’d rather be happy and “mid/ugly” at this point than perfect and perpetually discontent, vain, self-absorbed/self-conscious, insecure, etc. I have peace. People in pursuit of perfection do not. I sit where the grass is greener. Not them.

People forget veneers are for people who ALREADY HAVE MESSED UP TEETH! Not just because your smile is a little yellow, or a tiny bit crooked. They’re causing so many issues because people that DONT NEED THEM are getting them! They’re for people with chipped, extremely crooked teeth, or messed up enamel. You don’t need to RUIN YOUR REAL TEETH and get a whole new set if your teeth are healthy that’s what matters we need to stop the obsession with perfect teeth because it’s literally turning y’all into grandmas at 30

the dentists do not "lightly shave down the enamel," they remove a substantial part of the tooth, damaging the overall tooth structure. i used to make crowns, bridges and veneers for a living. i'm an ex-dental tech.
