We checked this one against the people who were actually there. Harry Cory, the engineer who closed the breach, gave sworn testimony, and George Kennan wrote an eyewitness account while it happened. Neither one records a single lost locomotive. The borrowed rail cars were counted and sent back. <br> <br>The one real wreck behind the legend was a single trestle that settled under a loaded train, and Cory photographed it himself and labeled it the wrecked battleship.
