Fun fact, the studio bought a horse so that the animators could accurately animate Spirit. When they were done with the movie, he was sent to a horse sanctuary and is still there today. He turned 30 back in May.
It’s called Return To Freedom in Lompoc, California and he and his 4 kids all live there. Technically his name is Donner, but at this point he is known as Spirit.
I got to meet him a few years ago and it was the best day of my life.

Oh, horses can swim. Quite a few love it a lot. When I was young I regulary visited a horseranch for two weeks where everyone got their 'own' horse for the duration you were staying there. They had a small lake near the ranch and there ould always be a t least one ride to the lake. Some horse would go in, some wouldn't and the teachers told you if you felt the horse buckle, gett off (we rode without sadlles) because that meant they decided to have an impromptu bath.

I have seen my dad cry twice in my life. Once when my half brother was born, and the other time was during this movie when I begged him to take me to it in 2002. 😅

Fun fact: a behind the scenes film showed they were debating giving a shadow of wings to Spirit in the jump scene, but it was decided at the last minute to delete them. I can’t remember the exact reason why… a sort of - less is more- moment I think.

55:40 🪽 I think that in that scene, Spirit already has his symbolic wings : Little Creek spreading his arms ! It's not super obvious but personally I really like that idea (and a little bit less "in your face" than an eagle passing by) 🤗🪽
Loved your reaction and the discussions that were engaged with !

17:58 I should say that horses convey a lot of emotion and intent with their head position, their ear position and the intensity of their eyes in real life. It’s really pretty easy to tell what a Horse is thinking, or trying to say to you based on how their ears eyes nostrils and head angle, sit. Now for this movie to make it easier for kids to understand they did add eyebrows which horses do not have so that they could use human facial such as raised and lowered eyebrows, one eyebrow higher than the other you know stuff like that which is what we are used to seeing when we see facial languages, but if you erase the eyebrows from every character in here, and if you’ve ever spent any time with actual horses you pretty much don’t really see that big of a change
