Furthermore, he wrote thirteen letters that make up the New Testament of the Christian Bible. Through his letters, Paul not only addressed the issues that challenged the local churches of his time but also synthesized the central doctrines of the Christian Faith that have since guided churches of all times and places. But it wasn't always this way. Before becoming completely devoted to the cause of the Gospel of Christ, Paul of Tarsus was someone who tried to destroy the Christian Faith. In the Bible, the apostle is called both Saul and Paul. Saul was the Greek translation of his Hebrew name, Saul, meaning "request" or "desired." Paul, on the other hand, was his Roman surname, derived from the Latin Paulus, meaning "small." The Bible states that the apostle Paul was born in Tarsus in Cilicia. Tarsus was not an insignificant place; on the contrary, it was a center of Greek culture. The city had a university near the northeastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Although born a Roman citizen through his father, Paul was a Jew of the Dispersion, originally from the tribe of Benjamin, and a zealous member of the Pharisees. No details are available about the apostle Paul's childhood and adolescence; it is only stated that he was educated in Jerusalem under the renowned doctor of the law, Gamaliel, grandson of Hillel. Paul had a profound knowledge of Greek culture. He also spoke Aramaic, was an heir to the Pharisaic tradition, a strict observer of the Law, and more advanced in Judaism than his contemporaries. After many years of being a pillar in the spread of the Gospel throughout the world, Paul's life came to an end during the time of Nero in Rome.
