I also used to go to the Mandarin Noodle House/Deli in DTLA Chinatown at least a few times a year. As you mentioned that place was great and it was a favorite of Jonathan Gold the famous LA Times food critic. I would always order the beef noodle soup and a side of dumplings which you could watch being made thru a window in a small prep area just to the left of the doors if I remember correctly. I always found the place by looking for the green sign and when I couldn't find that I knew they closed.

The SGV is such a struggle because there are so many local powerhouses that boast 40-70+ year lineages that are incredible right alongside brand new restaurants that are also pushing the envelope. So hard to decide between the ol' reliables and the new hotness.
