The original Goosebumps book covers is the best type of artwork history can provide

The most impressive part about these drawings is the skill of turning realisim into cartoon shapes.

I had a realization recently that I never noticed before. Goosebumps books, with their colorful frames and crazy artwork in the middle with a small signature in the corner, are oversized trading cards. The books are big cards! Look at the Mars Attacks cards. A picture with a small explanation of it on the back. Goosbumps books ditched the little explanation, and opted for a full story instead.

Being the age of Pokemon, the subtle trading card-like design of Goosebumps books could have been a great help in their success.

Honestly makes me so happy that my mother kept all my Goosebumps Books I must have about 50+ and she kept the Goosebumps toys as well. I used to look at all the cover art for ages and they all have that book smell.

As a kid, I loved the original artwork. I want to rebuy the set for nostalgic reasons but they only sell the books with the crappy new artwork.

The cover art on all of the classic Goosebumps books are simple yet very effective in delivering the subtle terror that’s to come even before you start reading the book.

I interviewed tim jacobus on my podcast and he stated that he lost all of the original paintings of the covers save for the haunted mask due to scholastic flood
Tim is great and could you believe hes only ever met R.L Stine once? He got the writing prompts from Stine and or would be sent letters by stine and left up to him to design the covers. And the reason there is no red blood albeit to jacobus’s dismay scholastic said red blood would be too much

It's a bit ironic that my favorite cover (Stay Out of the Basement) is one of the few not painted by Jacobus, because I had always figured it was by him. It definitely complements the aesthetic of the other original covers.

The barking ghost is easily the scariest cover 32:51 close second
