  pirlo for sure is in my all-time top 11, he cemented that with his dagger to my german heart in the 2006 wc semi finals :D

  He was originally a number 10 and Mazzone told him to drop back in the midfield. That move changed his career. I don’t think he would have had the same career as he did if he would have kept playing as a #10. He was born to be a regista

  Pirlo made me fall in love with the regista role. As a milanista, I was mad at Galliani when he let him go, and I was so sure that it was going to haunt Milan... And it did. I will always love Pirlo.

  One of the greatest players I’ve ever seen. It was such a privilege to watch this guy. I remember the first time I noticed him was at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and I asked my Dad how it was possible that I had never seen this guy before and why didn’t he play for the national team much. I remember my Dad saying something like he hadn’t really played well for Italy up to that point when he was given opportunities. I remember thinking my Dad and Trappatoni (this took place shortly after Trappatoni left and Lippi became the coach. Gentile was the coach of the Olympic team/U21) must be insane and that it wouldnt be long before he was integral for Italy. That team ended up doing a decent job and winning bronze and that was largely bc of Pirlo. However, it was two years later, watching him at the 2006 World Cup when I finally told my Dad, “I knew you were wrong about him”. Pirlo was unplayable in that tournament. For me, he was better than Zidane in that tournament.<br><br>Side note: I gotta say, nothing but respect for Joe Hart too. From all the interviews I’ve seen, the guy seems so humble and respectful.

  Pirlo completely ignored an entire season at Reggina in his autobiography. A major stepping stone in his development. Given he was put out on loan I would imagine his ego was the reason for his omission. I had a season ticket that year and watched him every week. The fans adored him. He was great. To fail to acknowledge that in any way in your autobiography is very strange.
