And then Messner went back in 80 i think and did the north ridge solo in the freaking winter. Nobody else on the moutain, just him. No rescue team at base camp. Just his girlfriend. Incredible.

Brian Damage - there is but it is more subtle. The quality of this doco made 50 years ago in contrast to the shite on youtube today. The contrast is stark

What an extraordinary feat. I was a very fit 35 year old hiking the Himalayas. The night before climbing up to a pass of 5800m was spent in a mountain hut just over 5000m. I woke up 2 or 3 times trying to catch my breath in a semi panic, not knowing if I was going to be able to. I had never experienced that before. Its not fun. Thankfully, I didn't have that problem the next day at 5800m. These guys are super humans.

I seen parts of this film back in 1989, when I started my Alpine endeavors. Just the year before this, in 3 days Messner and Habler had ascended Hidden Peak(another 8000m peak) in completely alpine style and with no bottled oxygen or Sherpas, just like they were in the Alps, so they had a good idea they could do it.

The problem with growing up in the mountains is that you have nothing to think about other than what’s above you: while others don’t understand you live at the top. They come from below without the ability to live at altitude, no jokes required.

Messner is something different. He's a real life superhuman. Also, Mallory specifically stated on multiple occasions--including before the final attempt--he would not use the ridge route, and would not do the technical climbing over the second step.

Did he and Irvine make the summit? My guess is yes. This is because he died... and had strict turn around time (4:30PM). Put this together with what Odell said about when and where saw Mallory and Irvine on the mountain immediately after their climb and disappearance, I place Mallory and Irvine at the third step at the time of Odell's sighting, but we will never know.

Given what we know about the psychology of climbing, the above, and the location of Mallory's body, this has all the telltale signs of summit fever resulting in a late summit, and tragic loss of both climbers on the way down, which in 1924 would have been in complete darkness.

2:30 is Namche Bazaar…. Wow what a tiny rural village it was back then, compared to the blown up tourist center it is nowadays. 😮
