I would rather have a well-maintained home than a renovated home

We had a big move overseas a few years back, after living in our 3000 sq ft house for 20 years. We had SO much stuff. The best thing I did was hire someone to help me. She came to the house several times a week and we went through each room together decluttering. She took the donations away immediately and dropped them where they needed to go. She knew how to sell the more valuable stuff. We made more money from those sales than it cost us to hire her. She also found some young people who could use extra cash to come over and move the heavier stuff for us. I don't think we could have managed the move in the time we had without this help.

don't remodel your house if it's old and dated.  Yes you'll lose some folks but there are oodles of people who DREAM of a house where THEY can do that work.  Just take less money, you'll come out better in the end anyway.  Improvements won't get you 100% back.  Don't bother.  Sell that bad boy as-is, price appropriately and take that money!  Don't remodel.  For how to handle all the stuff, I have two words - Rent Dumpster!  The glory of pitching all that junk, those boxes of screws, those old plastic cups, etc.  In The Can It Goes!  YAY!  Once you get over the initial shock you'll be whistling in joy as you dump another box in the can and never look back.  Did it, Learned to Love it, AWESOME

We had used a handyman last year and found unfortunately the old saying,"jack of all trades, master of none" was very true.

My wife and I were planning to downsize, I’d like to do everything myself and painted almost every room did many repairs and the house looks great. Then we started looking at other properties for sale  and couldn’t believe the crap that was out there. Dirty, need repairs Then we said to ourselves why are we doing this. So we decided not to put the house on the market after all.

i prefer when people leave the house dated at the time of the sell. so i can update it with materials and a design i love rather than paying extra to get a cheap made in China IKEA  ( Ikea build a lot of their furnitures in China) Home Depot decor. the fun of owning a home is to make it ours.

Wow, this was truly insightful! I've never heard an agent speaking about selling a home after 60.  Regarding decluttering; After my mother's death, I had to sell her home and boy oh boy, there was so much stuff! Every room (5 bedrooms) as well as her garage, were packed. I had to hired someone to help empty the home because my siblings did not want to take part in helping out with the clearing and getting it ready to sell. The one salient experience I took away from my experience was; Don't collect too many things because your own kids will not want most of your stuff and they will have to clear out your home one day.

We new we wanted to move out of St Petersburg FL, I actually started to pack Misc stuff 2 years before we actually moved. This worked out fantastic as it was a constant reminder of what’s ahead. Every single thing around the house that was repaired was to sell. Painting trim, new roof, power wash fence, water heater, pumps, yada yada yada. Worked out fantastic as we found a place in Tennessee, house was ready to list, sold in 4 days. Best move ever. Got out of Fl in March 2024. Perfect timing.  😊

Just put my house on the market this week. New windows, new HVAC, new flooring, new roof, remodeled bathrooms, all new appliances in the last five years. Previous owner had already remodeled the kitchen. All the costly important stuff has been done. Highly recommend hiring help, even someone to help lift heavier boxes and stuff.

Watch 2-3 episodes of Hoarders TV series. You will be motivated to clean, declutter and clean, then sell, sell, sell! Do the Swedish custom of a de.ath cleaning. Get rid of your stuff while still alive. Excellent video!

We sold our home in 2021 after 20 years living there. Many happy memories of our dog Sammie who came to us as a Puppie. Many birthday parties, many family dinners, so many memories - but it was too much for us. Five acres, swimming pool, too much outdoor maintenance. The home was built in 1965. We did extensive remodeling while we lived there. It was truly a beautiful home and very amenable for entertaining. At that time in 2021 the housing market was on fire. We sold for over asking. And guess what happened?? The new owners (wealthy) razed it and built a new big home. I actually went to watch it being torn down. Had to let that go....
