I Secretly Daydreamed About Marrying Someone Else: The Confessions of a Caregiver Husband

What happens to a marriage when chronic illness takes over and a partner unexpectedly becomes a full-time caregiver? In this raw and unfiltered episode of the Like a Diamond podcast, hosts Andrew and Kristen Van Noy share their 15-year journey navigating chronic illness, severe depression, debilitating sleep deprivation, and caregiver burnout. Unlike past episodes where guests reflect after their trials have ended, Andrew and Kristen are opening up while still very much in the heat and pressure of their suffering. From Kristen’s early medical crises, agonizing panic attacks, and severe medication withdrawals, to years of restless leg syndrome that robbed her of restorative sleep, they explore the physical and mental toll of chronic invisible illness. Meanwhile, Andrew opens up about the unseen struggles of being a caregiver spouse—the emotional exhaustion, high stress levels that led to his own medical emergency, and the guilt of feeling stuck and secretly daydreaming about an escape. Together, they dive deep into how prolonged pain strains faith, shatters "transactional" views of God, and pushes a marriage to the brink. Most importantly, they discuss how couples therapy, radical honesty, and choosing connection over isolation helped them rewrite their marriage dynamic and find safety and hope—even when the healing hasn't come yet.
