  I like the concept of the special stages being a kind of alternate dimension similar to the backrooms, constantly changing and modifying themselves to protect the emeralds.<br><br>Ps: Or perhaps it is the sheer energy of the emeralds manifesting a unstable pocket dimension around them to protect themselves.

  There is a myth stating that one of the early prototypes of Sonic 3 contained an earlier version of the seventh (launch base-themed) special stage that missed only 1 sphere to be completable, but it was only fixed close to release date due to the playtesters thinking they just didn&apos;t find it

  Imagine entering a blue spheres stage for the last super emerald, only for it to end up being like the prototype version of them. Theres no bumpers. Theres no yellow, blue, red spheres. Theres no sky. Theres not even a checkered ground.<br><br>You&apos;re stuck running forever trying to find what you thought was the almighty power to give salvation to the lives of all, only to see you&apos;re stuck forever in what seems to be &apos;nowhere&apos;.
