  Black Shadow was the first “blacked out” V-twin so popular since 2000, right? Was the next one the H-D at the time unloved 1977-1979 XLCR1000 Café Racer? H-D sold about twice as many (3,500+) than Vincent did with the Black Shadows. A somewhat “comparable” might be the H-D 1983+1984 XR1000 1,000 cc &nbsp;rated at 70 hp (stock) (up to 93 hp in race build - 10+:1 CR, race cam) with the XR750 aluminum heads but much heavier (509# wet). Both these H-D Sporties do have duel front disc brakes and a single on the rear. Neither sell at auction (as far as I have read) for anything close to a lower end B Shadow.<br><br>In Leno’s garage working on his Vincents is a far cry from wrenching in a clod, damp shed.<br><br>One wonders just how much drag reduction Rollie Free’s lay-down position was worth when setting the 150.3 mph record run. One report said he achieved only, “only,” 148 mph in a previous run wearing leathers and using a more upright posture (likely ‘60s Grand Prix tuck with some legs out on the side). Consider that a 2017 era GSX-R 750 is rated at 148 hp and only 168 mph top speed. Now the comparison is not direct. HP ratings could be based on different methods and at-the-crankshaft versus rear wheel; and at Bonneville one gets a far longer distance than at a shorter speed record venue, the Texas Mile. Still my best guess is if the Black Shadow could do 125 mph on only 55 hp then to go 150 mph the Black Lightning might need power in the 90 hp range. The XR1000 according to H-D could get 93 hp in the race build (stock spec):10.5:1 CR (9.0:1), open exhaust pipes exhaust (with muffling/silencer baffles) twin plug heads (single), racing “E” cams (stock 1983 1000 cc cams), one 40 mm carb per cylinder [Mikuni flat slide according to some sources] ( vs two 36 mm DelOrtos) and a whole slew of oil flow mods to keep the engine from self-destruction.
