  College music theory, teacher here, you’re right you’ll never find this in a textbook with the possible exception that voice leading chords are sort of a garbage can category and it might actually cover this a little bit.<br><br>However, I’ll be teaching this chord this year to my students thank you David for all your good work!

  I&apos;ve always found many opportunities to use tritone subs that are minor instead of dominant. Basically a chromatic approach from above in any flavor - even major 7 works. &nbsp;I started doing this because of Sir Duke!

  I&apos;d look at Golden Lady in another way. This is maybe a bit caveman, but he&apos;s kinda just stepping the chord roots up a whole step each time, which puts us slightly in mind of a whole tone scale.

  That&apos;s the thing with Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder - their songs blend very well with pop music but once in a while you just get a &quot;huh, what is going on there&quot;. <br><br>While with the Beatles/Radiohead, you immediately notice that there is something weird going on in the entire song. <br><br>Which, of course, is not to say that the former are better than the latter, just that you can immediately tell when the latter are experimenting.

  I hear a high pedal &quot;G&quot; note played through Golden Lady , i think this &nbsp;also glues the chords together. Because it s in all the chords except the Fm7

  I would argue Golden Lady is in G minor, not Eb, which does make the progression much less alien, too. A simple bVI–bVII–i walk up, followed by a ii–V, modally interchanged with the linear G Major. It&apos;s less common to see modal interchange where minor borrows from Major, but this is a great example of it, kind of &quot;brightening up&quot; the more austere iiø–V or the far too dramatic bII–V (TT sub)
