They are using other people's work without permission - they shouldn't be using these books in the first place. It doesn't matter why they destroyed them, it's horrible that they destroyed them.

So why are they putting this 'library" behind a firewall that no one can access? They're destroying them, and REMOVING them from public access. That sounds like cultural genocide!

Why not donate them to schools and libraries in villages and countries where they can be used freely?

It seems they want to build and teach the LLM with a one time fair use purchase then turn around and charge a subscription for access on their platform using the amalgamation of information they destructively scanned. <br>I don’t think it’s the book itself they care about, it’s the response the AI chatbot gives once prompted using the collected information.

My friend's mother ran a book store specializing in rare books. It would be terrible if all of this stuff disappeared.

In my opinion the disturbing part is the first motive, that is we need human written literature, even if low quality (and I believe this was the case for most of those books because of the price factor), because AI tends to poison itself over time. I think companies run this risk on their RAG implementations, at the end they'll need to push employee to abstaining from AI writing (including code...) else there is going to be only useless crap

It doesn't matter MOST people wouldn't read some of those books. It is extremely important that we keep them, especially the originals, in their printed forms and preserve them, so that a scholar or anyone interested could access them now or sometime in the future.

AI was a mistake, not because AI is evil, but because humans don't use it how it should.

Whether they succeed or not, they will always be remembered as those who tried to destroy humanity.
