What if the story of Cain and Abel isn’t original to the Bible at all, but a retelling of something far older written on Sumerian clay tablets? In this relaxing, storytelling-style deep dive, we explore the ancient Mesopotamian myths that may lie behind the biblical tale of Cain and Abel. We look at Sumerian texts about Dumuzi and Enkimdu, the farmer and the shepherd who compete for the favor of the goddess Inanna, and ask what these myths can tell us about the origins of Genesis. You’ll hear the actual Sumerian stories as we move through themes of murder, betrayal, the underworld, divine favor, and rejection. We also unpack the linguistic puzzle of KA.IN and HEVEL, trace connections to the Great Flood, and explore how farmer vs. shepherd conflicts shaped early religious thought. Perfect for listening as you fall asleep, this video blends mythology, biblical studies, and ancient history into a calm, immersive narrative.
