Back in the 80's when I was a teen my friends and I would travel into JHB city centre by train, we never felt unsafe nor needed adult supervision, our parents knew we were safe, it was an amazing city back then

I was mugged at Doornfontein station in the 89's while a student at the school of art and design, they clobbered me with nobkierries and stabbed me with a 🗡️, i survived , but it was a bad nasty experience! Acquired a firearm after that!

In the 70s, when I was about 12 years old, my brother & I stayed with my dad in a Hillbrow hotel. We walked up to the movies & back again at about 9pm & never felt a moments unease. Now that half of Africa has descended on Egoli I doubt there are any areas where you could do that - even the so-called "safe" areas

Just in and the guy who said if you grew up in Joburg you hear nothing good about Ponte. I stand to correct. During the Apartheid era and just before the ANC it was paradise. It's called Ponte City bcos downstairs in the building there were shops, laundromats, game arcade, mini cinema. Hence the name Ponte City
